What Do You Expect?

Published: Monday, August 20, 2012

No matter what issue brings a troubled teen to The Family Foundation School, somewhere along the line it became a family issue, negatively impacting family relationships.  As our students begin facing their problems and changing their behaviors, their lives improve and so do their family relationships.  But not always at the same time, or at the same rate.

One student found this out when a long awaited visit home didn't live up to his expectations.  His program amends weren't received as well as he thought they'd be, communicating was still difficult, and he ended up acting like his old angry self.  The only positive outcome, he said, was returning to school and talking about it with his sponsor, family leaders and friends. "They told me not everyone is on my timetable.  Just because I was ready to deal with something doesn't mean my parents were ready.  They have the right to their own views and emotions."  That kind of insight will go a long way to make sure his next home visit goes better.
