The troubled teens who end up at The Family Foundation School generally had no choice in the matter, although as one senior reminded a newcomer, "You had a choice in the behavior that got you here." And although there are many "must-do's" at a therapeutic boarding school, life here is still full of options. One girl who was into drugs and alcohol at home, still missed the "sophistication" of all that and steadfastly resisted most activities here, especially anything as "wholesome" as sports. But during an intramural basketball game one Sunday, she stunned her house (and herself) with a series of successful shots. Not only was her natural ability a surprise, so was how much she enjoyed it. The experience opened her to the possibility that other activities might not be what they seem, and that the school might have something to offer her after all. As the 12-Step slogan goes, 'If life doesn't get better, we'll gladly refund your misery."
