We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, and that teaching respect is an essential part of character education. A real "teaching moment" for staff here occurred recently when two boys were overheard making cruel remarks about another student, and staff turned their table topic into a full blown discussion of respect: of the dignity and worth of the individual, and the nature of bullying. The exchanges were intense, sometimes uncomfortable, but certainly instructive. By the end of the hour, every student in the family was more aware of the power and effects of their words, more attuned to the welfare of others, and more accepting of differences that can make interactions with others both challenging and rewarding.
