Absolute honesty doesn't come easy to anyone, especially troubled teens. But we believe that healing starts with telling the truth, so helping students develop a sense of honesty is a primary goal here. That includes the ability to be honest with themselves. For some, real clarity comes at a price.
Some months ago one of the boys here had a cousin who died of a drug overdose. The loss was overwhelming to him, but it also served as a wake-up call. The cousins were close growing up and their paths had taken the same turn. "It could have so easily been me," the student lamented. The tragedy has changed his life and his whole way of thinking, bringing a new level of honesty to his dealings with others, but especially to how he views himself.
