The students' days are highly structured. We are in school, including extracurricular activities, from 8:10 am to 6:10 pm, Monday through Friday.
The day begins with required chapel, which is led by Catholic, Protestant and Jewish leaders on a rotating basis.
Weekend days are equally structured with a variety of chores, study halls, and recreational activities.
Houses
The school is divided into four houses of about thirty students each. Everyone from the president of the school to the maintenance staff is assigned to a house. Each house has two family leaders who serve as mother and father for the house. Each student is assigned a staff sponsor from within the house at enrollment, but can change sponsors after three months, selecting a staff person from any house on campus. Students are also given a junior sponsor---a senior student from their own house.
Each house has separate boys' and girls' dorms, and a dining and living room suite. All meals, night study hall, and many recreational activities occur in the house.
Travel
Throughout its existence, recreational travel has been part of The Family Foundation School's program. Each house takes two to three trips a year, generally to educational or historic sites. Recent house trips included visits to Gettysburg, Mystic Seaport, New York City, Washington DC, and Philadelphia. In addition, every year the school's chorus and show choir travel to the North American Music Festival, which have been held in Toronto, Washington DC and most recently Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Computers
Juniors and seniors at The Family Foundation School have a laptop computer for their personal use. Younger students have access to computers in their houses and in the library. Upper level courses assume the use of the computer. For instance, our chemistry labs use Venier software and instruments that allow data to be fed directly into the computer so that students can analyze it. Our college-level chemistry course is offered online.
Students do not have access to email, and Internet use is closely monitored both by staff and by software.
